In September 2011, East Dunbartonshire Council in partnership with East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership, Alzheimer Scotland, Ceartas (Advocacy Service) and Carers Link established a co-production model of providing support to people with dementia and their families through Community, GP and Hospital Dementia Advisory Clinics. By enhancing the co-ordination of existing activities, the Dementia Advisory Clinics deliver bespoke information on a one-to-one basis for individuals concerned about dementia and act as a gateway to local specialist services. Through a number of locations throughout East Dunbartonshire, the clinics provide:

– multiple points of entry for information
– carer support
– sign posting
– implementation of dementia care standards
– anticipatory planning for people with dementia
– hospital, GP and care home in reach
– professional support
– training about dementia and dementia services

The Clinics enable the sharing of information by trained staff and volunteers working in line with national dementia standards and post diagnostic best practice. In addition the clinics offer three distinct tiers of support: members of the public can access the clinics anonymously if they choose to, or the Clinic staff can see named people by referral, or act on behalf of attendees through a mandate. Co-production and sustainable engagement with the third and independent sectors is a central feature of the Clinic model which sees key local groups working together with people who have dementia to deliver effective services. The innovative service design of co-production and personal choice has been central to the success of the model in promoting excellence in dementia care in East Dunbartonshire and is at the heart of a long-term culture change building towards establishing East Dunbartonshire as a dementia friendly community. The East Dunbartonshire Clinic model has been recognised nationally and internationally, firstly being used as an example of best practice by the Scottish Government’s Joint Improvement Team on models of co-production which support the transforming older people services agenda and secondly being recognised as one of the world’s most innovatively designed dementia services at the International Dementia Excellence Awards in Australia in June 2012.
