Borders Railway is the longest new domestic passenger railway in the UK for over 100 years, and a once in a generation infrastructure investment and opportunity for the South East of Scotland, and in particular for Midlothian and Scottish Borders. It will provide a modern, sustainable connection between Edinburgh and these communities, increasing their participation and role in the city region.

To deliver this major project, Scottish Borders Council (SBC), Midlothian Council (MC) and The City of Edinburgh Council formed a powerful partnership to work with Scottish Government, Transport Scotland and subsequently Network Rail. The long term collaborative approach to the project has ensured successful navigation of Parliamentary Bills and has overcome funding, procurement, technical and operational challenges, to a point where the railway lines are now being laid.

The project will be delivered on time and on budget, and as well as £33m of benefit for the wider Scottish economy, is set to deliver a wide range of benefits to communities across the region.
