The West Lothian Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Youth Forum and Glitter Cannons is a voluntary project supported by Community Youth Services (CYS) in partnership with LGBT Youth Scotland (LYS) and is young people led.
The Group works with young people aged 12-25 years old who campaign to improve the everyday lives of LGBT young people in their schools, homes and communities. This project has reduced the isolation that LGBT young people face, promoted equality and inclusion, increased LGBT visibility and improved young people’s mental health and well-being, life choices and opportunities.
This project has been the driving force behind the LGBT youth work that is now happening in schools and the wider community. 6 High Schools and 3 youth work projects are working with the forum to support LGBT young people. For example, the project delivered good practice workshops for Education Scotland in 2013 and 2014 on peer education which highlighted the importance of young people “educating the educators”. A number of high schools are also developing LGBT inclusive practice and establishing LGBT groups to work with staff and students to mainstream LGBT equality and inclusion in schools.
