TACKLING INEQUALITIES AND IMPROVING HEALTH – West Dunbartonshire Council – Pictorial School Menus

The West Dunbartonshire pictorial menu initiative ensures that pupils with additional support needs across the council’s Early Years Centres and primary and special schools are not disadvantaged in their school meal choices. The project meets a range of local and national objectives around providing personal support for children and young people, and the vision of the health promoting school as outlined in documents such as “Scotland’s National Food and Drink Policy”, “Getting it Right for Every Child”, “Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004″ and “Happy, Safe and Achieving Their Potential (2005)” .

This scheme ensures that every child has the opportunity to make independent personal choices and it has resulted in children showing a greater interest in their food choices. Not only that, but it was also provide to be an educational tool which aids learning. The pictorial menus are suitable for children with visual impairments, reading / communication difficulties, dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech/ language difficulties and autism spectrum to select their own lunches. The menus are available in A4 menu booklets for all pupils and also A3 stands in relevant locations. The formats are easy to read with simple fonts, high contrast of colours and easy to understand images.
