SERVICE INNOVATION & IMPROVEMENT – North Ayrshire Council – Young People in the Criminal Justice System

With a high prevalence of persistent offenders and a significant number of young people in North Ayrshire being made subject to secure remand placements, Youth Justice and Criminal Justice services in conjunction with partners, put in place measures to address this.

These measures included:

  • Design and implementation of Court Action Notes (provided to Sheriffs when young people appear in Court from custody)
  • Development of Youth Structured Deferred Sentences
  • Forging of closer links between Children’s Services and Criminal Justice Services.

Together the measures have led to an 85% reduction in young people being placed in secure remand and more positive outcomes for them following completion of community-based interventions.
