SERVICE INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT – West Dunbartonshire Council – Energising Employability through Employer Engagement

The Employability Skills Programme within West Dunbartonshire Council has gone further than other work placement services by re-structuring the management of its programme and re-defining how businesses and potential employers interact and engage with local schools.

The placement programme within WDC operates on a personalised and bespoke approach which engages with potential employers early in the process. This early engagement for pupils is managed through a devolved structure which places the expertise for coordination and management within the schools themselves. This gives pupils more accessible advice and support for all aspects of employability particularly in the formative stages of their transition.

The re-design of the service and the ways in which the Council works with employers has seen participation levels increase from 81 in 2009-10 to 457 in 2013-14.
