In 2011, East Renfrewshire Council introduced a Graduate Internship Programme and since then the programme has been going from strength to strength with 94% of graduates entering graduate level-employment or further training. ERC has created a unique programme in partnership with the Centre for Scottish Public Policy’s “Adopt an Intern”, supported by a local Third Sector Organisation to the benefit of both the public sector and the private and third sectors. Although the main purpose of this initiative is to tackle the problem of graduate unemployment, it has also allowed ERC and partner businesses to work towards its goals by capitalising on the skills of recent graduates. The aspiration now is to get more private sector businesses on board and to work collaboratively with other Local Authorities to more effectively match supply of skills to business demands.
