The M Factor partnership project encapsulates excellence, innovation and ambition in education. This authority-wide project enabled 28 primary schools, serving diverse communities, to deliver a highly-motivating and innovative educational experience involving 700 children and a range of international, UK and local partner organisations. Based loosely on the X Factor concept, the M Factor is about using the power of music to draw upon the creativity and enterprise of our young people and to help bridge divides and inequalities within our communities. No other project of this scale or technical challenge has been attempted in Midlothian (or elsewhere in Scotland). The M Factor wasn’t just a school talent show – it was a series of integrated challenges involving the creation of a song, video, website, band merchandising and marketing campaign, leading up to a grand final in front of a live audience. Through the use of the internet voting platform provided by Education Scotland opened the M Factor up to a national and international audience.
The scale of the project and the innovative approaches used to deliver the M Factor took Midlothian’s learners and teachers into new territory.
