Dundee was the first city in Scotland to adopt a corporate parenting policy in 2000. The policy included the establishment of a ‘Board’ to “Champion the needs of looked after and previously looked after children”
The ‘Champions Board’s remit is to provide a platform for looked after children to engage with their “corporate parent” and make their needs known. The Champions Board brings together Chief Officers, Elected Members, young people and their supporters to discuss and make decisions on an agenda set by the young people themselves.
The Board has a strong culture of working together in partnership, and celebrated its 1st anniversary on 21st June 2012. The process is very intense and dynamic, and has led to a significant improvement in self-esteem and confidence for many of the individual young people involved.
Already a beacon of good practice, the Board is making real progress towards achieving an evidenced based and sustainable change in culture, systems and practice across the looked after children spectrum.
