North Lanarkshire Council – The NL Connection

Submitted by on March 4, 2010 – 10:25 pmNo Comment

As Scotland’s fourth biggest authority (pop. 323,000, Social Work budget £200M), North Lanarkshire has the second largest share of the most deprived areas in Scotland. With budgets fully committed, services cannot be expected to meet or cater for every support need. Family, friends and wider society have a role to play in ensuring that people with additional support needs take their place as citizens at the heart of local community life. However, not everyone has family, friends or links to the wider community. People with additional support needs have often been amongst the most marginalised and are most at risk of poor health and well being. The NL Connection Project utilises BIG Lottery Funding to deliver an innovative partnership of volunteering, participatory arts and community connecting activity – to achieve social change and build community capacity. The project re-connects marginalised people who might otherwise become (or remain) reliant on formal statutory support services, to become re-engaged with local community networks and become active, involved citizens
