City of Edinburgh Council – JET (Job+Education+Training) Programme

Submitted by on March 4, 2010 – 10:41 pmNo Comment

The JET (Job + Education + Training) Programme is a year long, work-based learning programme, which combines school education with vocational training and real work experience. Aimed at S4 students who may be at risk of leaving school without a job or further training arranged, the young people are released from school one and a half days per week. Half a day per week they attend a training venue where they study towards a National Progression Award in Employability and Enterprise or relevant sector specific vocational qualification. Three and a half days per week they attend school as normal and work towards their standard grade/intermediate exams and every Friday they undertake a full day’s work experience with a major employer in the city.

Due to popular demand of the programme by young people it has undergone rapid expansion and is now being delivered on a citywide basis to approximately 200 young people from 18 of Edinburgh’s 23 high schools. The JET Programme is proving to be successful in demonstrating partnership working, but more importantly in delivering on its aims. Young People are entering and sustaining positive post-school placements, many taking up employment and modern apprenticeships with their JET employer.
